    I

bought the Mr. Coffee BVMC-KG6 mainly due to it uses the Keurig’s K-cups. After looking at several of Keurig’s own machines I finally ended up with this Mr. Coffee machine since it was cheaper and had all the features I was looking for.

I love the great variety of flavors of coffee K-cups offer. In addition you can also get K-cups with tea and hot chocolate, perfect for the rest of my family who doesn’t like coffee as much as me.

K-cups are pricy, no doubt about it. Not everybody is willing to pay over half a dollar for a single cup, but you can always get one of the reusable K-cups. With the reusable capsule you can add your own fresh ground coffee and drastically reduce the cost per cup while still enjoy the convenience of a single serve brewer.

The machine is also available in both blue and

    Build quality and looks

Enough about the K-cups, let’s take a closer look at the machine itself. The Mr. Coffee BVMC-KG6 is available in three different colors; silver, blue and red. I went for the silver version or black as Mr. Coffee for some reason calls it. The main part of the machine is black while the cylindrical K-cup holder and the edge around the drip tray have a silver finish. The silver parts look almost like brushed stainless steel and matches nicely the rest of my kitchen appliances.

I really like the look of the machine with the mix of polished and matte black with silver details. Everything on this machine is made of plastic, but I don’t really mind. Isn’t all things today made of plastic?

I would say the overall building quality is good. My only complaint is the mechanism for the K-cup holder could have been sturdier. It is not like it is flimsy, but maybe something that could potentially break if you are clumsy. This is after all a moving part that is opened and closed every time you use the machine.

    Features and functions

Mr. Coffee BVMC KG6 single serve brewerThe drip tray can be detached which is very handy when it is time to empty and clean it. By detaching the tray it allows you to use the machine to brew directly into you travel mug as well. I measured the clearance without the tray to be a bit more than 7 inches.

In the back, you will find the 25 inch electrical cord with its storage. A simple yet nice feature that keeps my countertop tidy.

The water reservoir is located on the machines left side and made of clear plastic so you can easily determine how much is left by a quick glance. The machine has also an indicator light that will notify you if the water level is running low. The reservoir can hold up to 40 ounces which will give you 4 to 6 cups of coffee.

I really like that the reservoir is removable which makes it really easy to refill under the faucet. You can also refill the reservoir while it still is attached to the machine by removing the lid. On the rear end of the reservoir there is a “handle” which makes it more convenient to carry.

The Mr. Coffee BVMC-KG6 has a building in automatic shut-off function, but you must manually turn it on. It took me sometime and digging in the user manual to find how to activate it. By pressing and holding both the “Brew/OFF” button and “serving size” button for 5 seconds you will turn the automatic shut-off function on. The machine will then turn itself off after 2 hours sitting idle. You can of course also turn it off manually by holding the “Brew/OFF” button.

    Brewing a cup of coffee

The machine will turn itself on when you open the lid for the K-cup basket and start pre-heating water. You can hear the machine pumps water into the boiler. The pump is not loud, but audible.

The red pre-heating light starts to flash and when it extinguishes after about two and a half minute you are ready to brew your cup of coffee. The 1000 wattage heating element does a great job of heating the water fast and efficiently. Please note that the pre-heating will be a lot shorter for the second cup.

MrCoffee-BVMC-KG6-control-panelI really like the function that allows me to choose the brewing size. I can choose from a big 10 oz. cup, a medium sized cup of 8 oz. to a small 6 oz. cup of coffee with a push of a button. Usually I need a big cup of coffee in the morning to wake up while the small 6 oz. cup is perfect for the evening.

The brewing process takes roughly about 30 seconds and is fairly quiet. All I can hear is the water that is forced through the K-cup and the low noise from the pump. You will not bother anybody at the office with this machine!

The result is a cup of good, strong and hot coffee. When I measure the temperature of the coffee straight afterwards the thermometer showed 195°F, not bad at all.

The great thing about K-cups is the variety; I believe they have up to 250 different types of K-cups. It shouldn’t be a problem finding a favorite among the selection of coffee flavors. Although I must confess that nothing beats freshly ground coffee.

This machine does not have a water filter and if you are using water from the faucet you should descale the machine once in a while. This will hopefully ensure the machine keeps working for years. To descale, add undiluted white vinegar in the water reservoir and run brewing cycles until the reservoir is empty. Rinse with water afterwards.

    Conclusion

I really love my new Mr. Coffee BVMC-KG6 single serve brewer. It is everything I wanted and some more. It is easy to use and brews a great tasting cup of coffee in minutes. The overall build quality is good, but with a potential weakness in the K-cup holder mechanism. The biggest selling point for me was that it used Keurig’s K-cup system and it was cheaper than Keurig’s own machines as well. The K-cups are quite pricy, but you can always use a reusable K-cup to add your own fresh ground coffee. If you want a single serve brewer and are happy to pay for the K-cups this machine is a really good option.
