De’Longhi Lattissima Plus EN520SL Review
De’Longhi Lattissima Plus is a signle-serve brewer which uses the Nespresso capsule system. Adjust the four different programmable brewing options to your liking. The one-touch milk frother makes thick foamy steamed milk for your lattes. The milk container can conveniently be detached and stored in the fridge between uses.
hat I love about my new De’Longhi Lattissima Plus is how easy it is to make espresso shots and lattes with plenty of steamed milk. The machine uses Nestlé’s Nespresso capsules which come in a great variety of coffee types and tastes.
The single-serve brewer is quite compact when you take into consideration that it has a fully automatic milk steamer attached to it. You can get the Lattissima Plus in four different color variations, white, blue, red and brushed stainless steel. Since I already have a fridge and other kitchen appliances in brushed stainless steel, I of course went for the one with steel finish. I am quite pleased with the building quality, the plastic parts and stainless steel panels feel sturdy.
In the back of the machine you will find the clear plastic water reservoir. The reservoir is detachable which makes refilling under the tap or by a pitcher easy. After using the De’Longhi machine for a few weeks I have noticed that the reservoir’s capacity of 900mL (about 30oz.) is emptied rather quickly. Especially when making beverages with steamed milk.
As I mentioned above, the Nespresso capsules has a good collection of coffee and you will easily find a few new favorites. The capsules make great coffee, but they are quite pricey. Maybe one of the most expensive options for pre-packaged coffee.
You should know that you cannot buy Nespresso capsules in regular grocery stores, only in specific Bloomingdale’s stores and special Nespresso stores. Even though I prefer to be able to buy my coffee in the local store, I have found it to be both fast and easy to order online or by phone. The capsules are delivered by the door either the next day or the day after.
Easy and fast brewing
I love the speed and ease of use with this De’Longhi Lattissima. The capsules are inserted on top by opening the lever. By closing the lever the capsule is punctured and you are ready to choose your coffee beverage.
There are four different brewing options you can choose from. A single shot espresso serving (40mL) and a Lungo sized serving (about 100mL). The last two brewing options use the milk frother to make a cappuccino sized and a latte sized beverage.
The default servings are surprisingly small on all options and especially the milk based beverages. It is a good thing that you can re-program each button to your preference. Re-programming is very easy, you just hold the button of the type of serving you want to change down for as long as you wish. When you let go the machine remembers the volume and it will make an equal cup the next time you press the button. It took me a few tries to re-program the different types of servings to just my liking, but it works great now.
The coffee is really good and hot, I have even managed to burn my tongue. My favorite is the Ristretto blend; it works great for both straight espresso and cappuccino. The espresso shot gets a thick layer of crema, just as a proper espresso should have.
The used capsules fall down into a storage drawer when you open the lever to add a new capsule. No need to clean the machine each time you use it, but I can be smart to run a cycle with clean water once in a while.
The milk frother or steamer works automatically when you choose one of the two milk based beverages on the main machine. The control knob on top of the milk frother let you adjust the volume of steamed milk on the go.
The frothed milk is very thick and makes great cappuccinos and lattes. The temperature of the frothed milk is about 120°F which is quite good and doesn’t make lattes and cappuccinos cold, but it could be warmer. However, I feel the frothed milk is not as foamy, smooth and hot as the frothed milk from my old espresso machine with a proper steam wand. Another thing is that the machine adds the steamed milk before the coffee. I prefer it the other way around.
I love how easy it is to clean and rinse the milk frother after making a latte or a cappuccino. By pressing the clean button, the machine blows steam through the nozzle for about 10 seconds. Remember to have a cup underneath the nozzle so you can easily discard the milk and water coming out of the nozzle and avoid making a mess. The whole milk frother section is detachable and can be placed in the fridge between uses. The milk frother can be disassembled and cleaned in the dishwasher.
De’Longhi EN520SL Lattissima Plus is a great single-serve brewer, if you don’t mind the relatively high priced capsules which can only be bought online or in specific stores. It can make both a strong espresso shot with a thick layer of crema or a delicious latte with plenty of steamed milk with a push of a single button. I love the espresso this machine makes while my wife makes lattes nonstop. If you want great coffee at a push of a button with minimal cleaning and maintenance this should be your new coffee machine.
