  • Brief Summary

The Mr. Coffee CG13 is a 12-cup drip coffeemaker made with BPA-free plastic. It is available in both black and white. Even though it is a basic machine it has a neat feature like the pause and serve function. A water filter can be retrofitted, but doesn’t come in the box.

he Mr. Coffee has a wide range of different coffeemaker models, anything from state of the art machines to basic ones. Mr. Coffee CG13 is definitely a basic coffeemaker.  Believe it or not, I think this is actually a good thing. The CG13 is so easy to use and has also some neat features you wouldn’t expect from such a basic model.

You can get this machine in either black or white. When I had a look at them both side by side in the store I liked the white one best. It really stood out from the rest of the dark and boring machines.

But I soon found out coffee stains and spills really stand out on the bright white finish. So if you like the white version best as I do (or did), don’t forget the machine won’t stay as white and clean for very long. I now usually wipe the machine with a wet cloth after each use to get rid of any stains.

The Mr. Coffee CG13 is made of plastic, expect for the glass carafe and its metal hot plate. I can’t complain about the building quality, the plastic seems to be sturdy and is completely BPA-free. Good job, Mr. Coffee!

In the back you will find storage for the excess electrical cord to keep the countertop tidy.

    Preparing the machine

The machine fits nicely underneath my cupboards (it is 12.5” tall), but since the water is filled from the top of the machine I have to pull it forward. The water reservoir can hold one full carafe which is 12 cups (60 oz.). There is a water level gauge/ indicator on each side of the coffeemaker. The clear plastic makes it easy to determine how much is in the reservoir at any time.

Preparing Mr.Coffee CG13Be aware that if you overfill the water reservoir it will drain the excess water through a few holes in the back. The opening for the reservoir is also largest in the back, close to the holes, which is a bit inconvenient. If you pour the water too quickly into the reservoir close to the holes you might end up getting some water spillage. It is not a big problem, as long as you are aware of it.

A water filter can be bought separately and retrofitted into the reservoir. The filters are sold online for less than $15 for twelve filters which will last you 12 months.

Under the same lid that covers the water reservoir you will find the filter basket. The filter basket can be completely removed which makes it easier to add grounds or remove the grounds after you are finished brewing. The arm which drips the hot water over the coffee grounds swings to the side so it won’t be in the way when you remove the filter basket. When you close the lid the arm swings back into place. A neat feature for a low budget coffeemaker.

Brewing coffee with the Mr. Coffee CG13

This machine doesn’t have any fancy switches or buttons, just a simple on/off switch. A full 12-cup pot takes about 10 minutes to brew. The hot plate keeps the coffee hot as long as the machine is on.

The only thing I miss about this drip coffeemaker is an automatic shut-off function. This is a function that is almost standard these days and therefore it is disappointing that it lacks such an important safety feature.

On the other hand, I love the “pause ‘n serve” feature. If you are not familiar with this feature, it basically let you have a cup while the machine is still brewing. But remember to replace the glass carafe without too much delay or the basket will overflow and will have coffee everywhere.

Most importantly, the coffee this machine makes is both hot and good. It is not a gourmet cup of coffee, but what can you expect for a coffeemaker for about $20?

The Mr. Coffee CG13 is a great drip coffeemaker if you take into account the price. Even though it is a low budget machine it has a neat feature like pause and serve. Unfortunately, it lacks the automatic shut-off function which is the only thing I really miss. If you want a cheap and basic machine that makes a good coffee this machine is a good option.
