he Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central is a stunning drip coffeemaker with some retro details. The stainless steel construction makes it look impressive and very sturdy. Another reason it might look so impressive when it sits on my kitchen counter is that it is fairly tall. It fits underneath my cabinets, but I have to pull it forward to add coffee grounds and water. It is an inconvenience but I have learned live with it. The few plastic parts feel sturdy and I was happy when Cuisinart told me the plastic was BPA-free.

I fell in love with the metallic red version so I bought it even though it might not match the rest of my appliance in my kitchen. But who cares, right? If you don’t want a red coffeemaker like me, you can have it in 9 different color variations. Choose from chromed, brushed steel, black, blue, green, orange, pink, purple and red. You will surely find a version that fits your kitchen.

Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central Control PanelRetro feel with latest features

The knobs and switches on the control panel have a retro feel, but the machine has all the latest features.

One thing my drip coffeemaker must be is programmable. I always prepare my coffeemaker the night before so I can have freshly brewed coffee waiting for my when I get up. This machine can of course do this as most drip coffeemakers nowadays, but I love the next function maybe even more.

One of my favorite functions is the 1- to 4-cup feature which makes this drip coffeemaker almost a single serve brewer. If you try to brew only a few cups of coffee with a drip coffeemaker the result is usually lukewarm coffee. The reason for this is that the coffeemaker won’t have enough time to heat up the water properly. If you choose the 1- to 4-cup function the Cuisinart Brew Station will slow down the process which gives it enough time to heat up the water to the correct temperature. The result is piping hot coffee.

The machine has a light that will illuminate when it is time to cleaning the coffeemaker. It says “Self Clean” but it really only tells you that you need to add water and vinegar and run cycle. This is actually something you should do once in a while. If you haven’t rinsed your machine for a long time you can really taste difference.

    Brewing great coffee

As most drip coffeemakers, you add water and the grounds at the top. The lid flips open and has a neat little lip that makes the condensed water to drip back down into the reservoir. The opening to the water reservoir is all the way in the back and has only a small narrow opening which makes it a bit challenging to pour without spilling. It is not a real problem but a wider opening would have been better.

The machine comes with a gold tone permanent filter which works alright. I personally like paper filters better since permanent filters let through too much sediments for my taste.

    Cuisinart Brew Central different colors

The different colors, note that chrome is missing.

Something I haven’t seen before on my previous drip coffeemakers is the showerhead which distributes the hot water evenly over the coffee. This is supposedly going to improve the brewing process and make better coffee.

While the machine is brewing you can have a cup without stopping the process due to the brew pause. When you pull out the glass carafe the basket stops the flow of coffee, but the brewing cycle doesn’t stops. I believe you have about 30 seconds before the basket will overflow and you will have a huge mess to clean up. I think it is a great feature if you just can’t wait to have your first cup of coffee.

When the coffeemaker is finished brewing, it will notify you with 5 audible beeps, very convenient when you are doing errands around the house. Because you don’t want to wait longer than necessary for your coffee which is smooth, taste greats and is very hot.

I believe the reason why my coffee tastes so good with this machine is due to the charcoal filter, but I am not sure. It is an inconvenience to have to change the filter every 60 days or 60 uses, but since it might improve my coffee I don’t really mind.

I am pleased with the glass carafe, it doesn’t spill a drop. A nice detail is that it has a built-in plastic rim to keep it from breaking in the sink.

The heating plate has a scratch resistant coating and a temperature probe. This probe is part of the adjustable heating plate function; you can adjust the temperature of the plate to low, medium and hot. If you set it to hot it will keep you coffee steaming hot as when it was freshly brewed.

The Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central looks good with its stainless steel construction and retro control knobs and switches. It cost a bit more than most drip coffeemakers, but I think it is worth it. It has all the features I want and then some. The only thing I didn’t like with it was the opening to the water reservoir and that it was a bit too tall, but these are not causing major problems. If you don’t mind paying a bit more for you drip coffeemaker, but in return get a great machine this is the coffeemaker for you.
